How do you calculate solar flux at varying latitudes?
For example, solar radiation at equinox at equator is given, how to calculate flux at 75 degrees latitude? How to calculate flux at summer or winter solstice?
If you’re just asking a question about geometry, the earth’s axis is tilted at about 23 degrees. So at 75 degrees latitude, at the equinox, at solar noon, the sun makes an angle of 75 degrees off the vertical, or 15 degrees above the horizon. The solar flux against a horizontal surface would therefore be cos(15 degrees) times the flux at the equator, all other things being equal.
At summer solstice, the sun will be 23 degrees higher above the horizon, so cos(38 degrees) is the number to use in the calculation. At winter solstice, the sun is 23 degrees lower, or in other words, below the horizon. The solar flux is zero.
Now, in reality, the sun goes through a thicker atmosphere at a low angle, and pollution and local geography have a tremendous effect. For a solar energy application, nothing beats real historical data compiled over time
