What does ‘pass’ here refer to? (top shaft for each roll pass)?
It is about a roll forming machine:
Adjusting screws, for making vertical adjustment of the top rolls, are designed with dials and scales to provide micrometer adjustment and a means of recording the position of the top shaft for each roll pass and each shape being formed. The shaft diameter of most machines is from 25-90mm.
Roll forming involves feeding sheet metal through rollers that bend the metal into long continuous tray shapes that are cut off. Usually the metal comes from coils that are unwound, fed and cut in the first operation and the pieces are then further formed. A pass is sending one cut off piece through. What the specification is saying is that the position of the shaft is recorded for the whole pass and not in detail during the pass to record variations in pressure and thickness, which would cost more.
Also, in some applications, the metal is partly formed, the top shaft lowered, and the metal passed back through for a progressively greater bending until the final shape is reached and each pass is recorded.
