Air Acetylene

45. Which fuel oxidant mixture is used in atomic absorption instruments?
a)Nitrous oxide/air.
b)Acetylene/air.
c)Methane/air.
d)Oxygen/acetylene.
and why?
Which fuel / oxidant mixture:
No…a)Nitrous oxide/air….both are oxidizers
yes…b)Acetylene/air. is the most common Fuel/oxidizer
acetylene is the fuel & air has the oxidizer
No…. c)Methane/air. not hot enough to atomize most unknowns
Not usually…..d)Oxygen/acetylene. not a fuel/oxidant… it’s an oxidant/fuel
Besides that, the mixture is too hot for most analyses. we usually need a reducing flame. At this high temp some metals form metal oxides that do not dissociate into atoms. It can be used when high atomization temperatures are required.
sometimes we use even hotter flames like acetylene/ nitrous oxide when we need a hotter flame
