Fast speed gives you quick work and low speed gives you more power; not much different than a transmission in your car. It also has forward and reverse in both of those speeds. That is very important.
Basically, with the DV18DL you are really getting three tools in one mean machine: a variable-speed, reversing drill; a power screwdriver with an adjustable slip clutch; and a hammer-drill.
