Do i need flux core welding wire in a MIG welder running without GAS or can i use normal welding wire?
i have a mig welder with gas but gas empty. do i need to buy the flux core wire or does normal standard wire fine work if not running gas and if so what is the difference in weld quality etc and do i swap terminals
*facepalm* You’re certainly welcome to TRY that solid wire without gas!
The result of doing this is usually not anything that can be called a “weld”. What you end up with is a frothy, brittle deposit of iron oxide, the same substance as what’s leftover from an oxyacetylene cutting torch. Also, the arc sounds different. Instead of making a nice “crackle” like frying bacon, the arc starts making a buzzy “whooshing” or “hissing” sound, kind of like someone blowing their nose. This is an easy way to tell that you’ve run out of gas.
Just get yourself another bottle of CO2 gas. The cost per pound of steel for the CO2 + solid wire is generally less expensive than buying a spool of pricy “self-shielded” flux core wire.
In my opinion, the self-shielded flux core wires are one of the worst welding products invented, they create brittle, shallow welds, are difficult to use, incredibly easy to misuse, and they create toxic, hazardous fumes so they should NEVER be used indoors.
On the other hand, they probably shouldn’t be used at all.
NOTES:
-when using pure CO2, always use ER70S-6 MIG wire.
-MIG welding (with gas), or gas-shielded flux core (aka dual-shield), the torch needs to be connected to the POSITIVE. The ground clamp is negative.
-when using “self-shielded” flux core wires, the opposite is true- the torch is always NEGATIVE.
