need help on breaker points/timing for my 73′ cb350?
i think i’m in some trouble! as i was adjusting the breaker points gap (my first time), i followed some advice by using a ratchet to turn the bolt head in the center of the points in order to check the proper gap. i don’t know whether i was given poor advice or if the metal of the bolt itself was old and brittle, but the bolt head sheared off, and now i have a problem. will i be able to remove and replace the bolt (with a screw removal kit or some other method?) without messing up everything inside and having to rebuild the engine? or should i just bring it to a shop? i’ve already called around for repairs, everyone in boston is booked until october. i’d like to be able to ride again this season, but i’m really stressed over the fact i may have done some serious damage.
NEVER use that center bolt to turn the engine.
Whoever told you that, should be shot, after you sue him in small claims court.
Turn the engine with the bolt at the rotor (left crankcase cover).
Don’t attempt removing the bolt yourself. unless you have experience – I mean successfully removed 10 broken bolts using screw extractors.
The bolt is broken in a very critical part – the camshaft.
Make 1 mistake and it’s engine tare-down time along with the hassle of locating a camshaft.
If you can’t locate a motorcycle repair shop that can do the work – shop around at automobile repair shops.
They have the tools and experience to do that kind of work.
The reason I’m trying to scare you out of doing the job yourself, is because the bolt is “hardened steel”.
Ordinary drill bits will not cut through it.
A pilot hole (less than 1/16″) must be drilled first.
Drill bits that thin break easily.
Unless the drill bit is made of the proper material and the machinist knows enough to use cutting oil – it’s gonna turn into a project.
