To determine the maximum permissible power that can be transmitted by a hollow shaft?
Determine the maximum power that can b transmitted by a hollow shaft 60 mm ext dia and 40 mm int dia @ a speed of 2400 rev/min if the maximum permissible shear stress in the shaft is 20 MPa. Determine also the angle of twist in shaft over 3 m if the modulus of rigidity is 80GPa.
The allowable torque can be calculated from the following relationship:
tau = T*r / J
where tau is the shear stress, T is the applied torque, r is the distance from the shaft center to the area of interest (in this case, the outer fiber), and J is the polar moment of inertia.
Once torque is determined, then power is just the rate at which the torque is applied. So, power can be calculated as follows:
P = 2*pi*omega*T
where P is power and omega is the speed of the shaft in revolutions per second.
Then, the angle of twist can be calculated as follows:
theta = T * length / (J * G)
where theta is the angle of twist and length is the length of the shaft.
