Sword of Achilles: Should I get the long or the short one?

Which one can you afford? Cost should be a major deciding factor, and how the sword is constructed. I personally prefer full-tang construction with rivetted or wrapped grips, because that is far stronger than welded tangs with threaded ends. (The tang is the section of the sword that runs from the pommel to the blade inside the grip. The best tangs are ground down to match the grip from the unedged back section of the blade itself, with the grip being attached to it on both sides, usually rivetted. Many replica swords simply weld a piece of round bar stock to the bottom of the blade, thread the end, and insert it through the hilt and screw the pommel on to secure the grip.)
The steel I prefer is usually stainless steel, simply because I am out in the weather often with a weapon on my belt, and I hate to constantly have to keep a blade oiled or face cleaning rust from it. Check to see if the blade is sharpened already or just has a serviceable edge. I personally just keep a good edge on my blades, because keeping them sharp leaves a fragile edge. Properly used, a sword does not need to be razor sharp – it will do its job simply from the weight and inertia of the weapon itself.
Compare weight as well, although 7 more inches of steel is not that big of a difference. Get two pieces of wood, probably a pair of old broomsticks, and cut one to 30 inches, and the other to 37. While holding the stick as though it were a sword, let your arm dangle to point the tip of the “sword” towards the ground. Ideally the sword tip should not hit the ground but should clear it by at least a few inches as you swing your arm from back to front.
If the sword hits the ground or is within an inch or so of it, then that length is probably a little long for you. If both lengths are fine, and the additional weight is not a factor, then choose the longer one for better reach, or the shorter one for work in a shieldwall. Lone fighters usually take a somewhat longer weapon to increase their reach, but a shorter blade is a must in a phalanx so as not to injure your comrades to either side. In tight-knit shield formations the blade is used more to thrust instead of to slash.
