Does the UK use the Metric or standard system?
I always thought they used the Metric but then I watched some british shows about cars, and they’ll always say a car goes X mph
Do they use the Standard system, and if they do, why wouldn’t they use the Metric like the rest of Europe
We use both. We use metric measurements where it makes sense to use them, like science, medicine and engineering, and a lot of people now use metres and cm for measuring objects or rooms.
We mostly use imperial measurements for everyday things – pounds of beef, gallons of petrol, pints of beer, miles per hour, etc.
Younger people are more likely to use metric units because they have been brought up with them.
A few years ago the government tried to ban shopkeepers from selling items in pounds (weight) but the shopkeepers just went on doing it, so they backed down. That also answers your question about why we didn’t switch to metric. British stubbornness and disrespect for authority.
