can you charge nicd batteries in a nimh charger and vice versa?
All batteries whether lead acid, zinc, nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium iron require connecting to a direct current supply up to about one and a half times the battery voltage to be charged. Most chargers derive their power from the mains and require the mains voltage to be dropped to the above level. This is achieved with a transformer which drops the votage down, but only produces AC. Therefore the current must be passed through a diode to convert to crude DC. The current output of transformers varies according to their rating which is more or less dependent on their size. Bigger transformers can give out more Amps. Small rechargeables usually charge at low milliamps. so only require small transformers.
In the case of say new AA Nicads of 500 miiliamp hour capacity, it was usually recommended to charge initially at 50 ma for 10 hours plus a bit extra to cover losses. But batteries are often not fully discharged so you have to regulate the charge time yourself by guesstimation.
Nowadays buy a peak detect type charger suited to the size of our batteries and it will cut off automatically when the battery is fully charged. A lot of these chargers will charge AA or AAA. Do not buy one which states it is fast charge- this will shorten the life of your batteries appreciably.
Lithium Ion Batteries are a different size to AAs usually and will not fit the average charger.
I charge all my different battery packs – Nicads, Nimh etc.on a Peak Detect charger with fully variable charge rates and I have never had any trouble. I have other chargers all of which state that they are suitable for both Nicad and Nimh.
You will note that chargers are now available to charge from the socket in your car which is of course from the car battery. This can give out terrific amperage and although the voltage is about right for some packs, they would get fried. Therefore some resistance has beeen introduced to lower the current to the optimum rate.
