Phone Line?
my phone company won’t run a phone line to my home. approx. 1/2 mile. what kind of wire can i get in one continuous peice that will carry the current to provide a safe steady phone service? if there is such a thing is it costly?
right now i’m using a copper coated metal line that has two strands but it only came in certain lengths.its wired together and taped with liquid tape. when it rains moisture gets in the line and shorts it out.
the terrain is too rugged with many rocks, to dig a trench, we broke a ditch witch 5 times trying to bury a water line (which we had to buy and run ourselves) i live in wv, only 1/2 mile from a telephone line. to install it they want me to pay $5400 + still pay a monthly amount. its not an electrical hazard the way i have it. the only problems i have is lightning shorting out the wiring.(and of course the moisture.)

I do not understand the reason for them turning you down for service… 1/2 mile is pretty far of a distance
1 mile = 1509, so 1/2 mile would be 754 1/2 feet, so one 1,000 foot box of cable should be plenty to run without having any splices from one end to the other end…
I dont know what the landscape looks like, but I would not recommend running this overhead, as you are not going to be able to find dropwire, and even if you do, you most likely wont find 1000 ft roll of it…
I recommend digging a trench, and burrying a conduit to run the wiring inside of. with this length of cable, you do not want to have to troubleshoot and replace it in the future. running it underground in a conduit will eliminate any damage by direct sunlight, ice formation, down trees, squirrel and rodent bites,
use a large enough conduit so that there is room for other cables that you may want to run (rg6 for cable/tv antenna/cctv, cat5 for network)
at minimum I suggest you use a 1,000 ft box of 4 pair CAT3, which is voice grade cable, but for a few more dollars you can get a 1,000 ft box of cat 5, but in all honesty, if i was going to run a cable that length, I would prefer to run a 25 pair cable, so that there are plenty of spare pairs in the event that repairs or additions need to be made in the future. 25 pair cable can be quite expensive, but well worth it…
I recommend running at least 1 or 2 RG6 (COAX) cable, for video, at least 1 CAT 5 for DATA and at least 1 CAT 3 for voice, assuming that there are 2 buildings being connected with this cable… the additional spare pairs can also be used for an intercom, or buzzer system…

How to test your phone line if you have no dial tone
