How can I light a model succesfully who is sitting in a car at night time?
I want to shoot an image at night of a woman sitting inside a car and I will be lighting another figure outside of the car using a portable lighting kit, however, I am unsure how to light the woman in the car successfully as I cannot put any big photography lights in the car, and I don’t feel as if the light inside the car will be bright enough…..do you have any suggestions of how I can go about this??
Where the light is coming from will be important if you want it to look like a night time scene. If the light comes from an odd direction, or has an unnatural quality/color you may get the viewer thinking more about your light than the subject of the photo.
If she is supposed to be lit by the interior dome lights or courtesy lights, tape a slave flash out of site at that location. Normal light in a car may come from multiple points, such as a overhead light, a visor mirror light or colored dashboard lights. It will not usually come from the floor up.
If it is supposed to be from a street light, use a tight directional flash outside the car and aim it through a window, paying close attention to the angle so that no reflections direct towards the camera.
You will need to adjust the power between the different light sources to balance out the scene. I would also suggest tripod mounting the camera and using a slower shutter speed to allow other parts of the night time scenery to burn in rather that just having the strobes and nothing but black in the background.
