Good motorcycle tool kit?
I’m going to be starting a project on a 81 cb900c pretty soon. I have access to my father’s tools, but I want something of my own. This way, I can ensure quality as well as proper organization. I’m thinking of getting one of the 100(ish) piece kits that include lots sockets, screwdrivers, ratchets, pliers, wiring tools, etc. Would that be a good start? Problem is that I know one of those kits would have a lot of things I would never touch, considering my application. Are there any kits that are made specifically for motorcycle work(besides the bare bones on-bike kits)? If not, can someone suggest a good multipiece kit like I mentioned originally?
You will need the best tools that you can afford, as old Japanese bike’s fasteners age rather poorly. Screw heads and bolt heads round off and cheap or inexpensive tools just don’t cut it. Plan on buying a hand powered impact driver too, as this is an essential tool, it will come with a few hardened bits, when they break, buy better ones then you will be set for a long time. Good used tools are a great buy, old snap on metric sockets (broached with flank drive) are absolutely the best, the newer ones tend to shatter when stressed. I would rather have two of the ones used frequently than a set of new ones. Sears has a pro line of hand tools that are less expensive and similar quality. Check around and compare. Most of all have some fun!
PS stay away from the kits, they are for occasional users only, and every bike is different, just acquire your own and if it is a specialty tool, for one bike only, include it when you sell it, you can get your money back if you bought it right. Craigslist.org is a great place to find tools for sale, sometimes you can find tool boxes full of them as mechanics decide to get out or retire from the trade.
