Surface Conditioning
What conditions at the surface and aloft are most conducive for the formation of a hurricane?
In general,
1. Warm sea or ocean surface temperatures (around or above 80 degrees F).
2. Unstable environment (steep lapse rate in a deep layer starting from or just above the immediate surface). This environment is unstable enough to support deep convective thunderstorms.
3. An area of lowering of surface lowering pressure.
4. A low to mid level disturbance that will help maintain and may help organize a cluster or group convective cells. This can be a tropical wave or a general area of disturbed weather.
5. The combination of the development of the where the surface low will form in relationship to the location of the cluster of convective cells should help support the organization and the deepening of the surface low.
6. Plenty of moisture to work with in the atmosphere at most, levels, but most importantly at the low to mid levels.
7. Winds aloft should be weak. If any significant wind exists in the mid to upper levels, directional wind and speed shear should be weak to very weak. In most cases, the location will be best if under a broad upper level ridge or upper level large in size area of high pressure.
8. No nearby cold fronts or tropical weather systems approaching.
9. No cooling of surface water temperature is expected from advection or up dwelling.
10. Best if this area is not too close to the coast or near high mountain Islands.
That is all that comes to mind at the moment.
