How do I paint on leather athletic shoes?
I’ve been commissioned to paint on leather athletic shoes. I want the paint to stay and last the buyer a long time. How do I prep the surface, and seal the deal? I’ve read to use acetone, but then a shoe repair guys said “NO WAY, not on this leather”! He says just to take off the finish with paint thinner. Help!!!
I painted my leather jacket with a skull and cross bones. I used acrylic. I did not “remove the finish”. I used some windex to clean it a tad but other than that nadda. I treat it pretty bad too and it has stayed for over a year. I didn’t seal it.
for you shoes I would skuff the surface first with sand paper….not REALLY rough but kinda rough. There may be waxes etc on the surface you don’t want. Then use a tack cloth to remove any dust. I would go ahead and use some fabric medium with your paint. An even mixture is what is normally used for shirts. This would give flexability to it so it would not crack after it had been worn a while. For the sealer I would go to the leather store and use what they sell to seal leather. There are several brands I would not use a canvas type varnish.
