want to build hearth for a electric wood stove?
I have a plywood board 1/2in thick and is 2ft by2ft. I have placed slate on the top and have already grouted it. I was thinking about putting 1inx6inx25in white pine boards around the perimeter to give it a box look and also, to hide the grouted sides and to give the setup more height. I was wondering if the pine wound support all the weight. The board with the slate on is about 35-45lbs and the wood stove is 30- 50 lbs.
when you install your wood around the piece of plywood you need to install wooden cleats for it to rest on . do not nail the pine to the plywood and hope the nails hold the Weight .
The cleats 1″x 2″ will be 1/2″ + the thickness of slate,,,,,,, down from the top of the pine board’s . glue and screw the cleats ( 1 1/4″ screws so they don’t pop through ) let dry an assemble .
I might even make it a little bit lower to create a lip so the unit couldn’t vibrate off the top of the box . this will also help with the un even nature of the slate .
test it by standing on it , better to have it fail with you there than the when your at work and it causes a fire .
For nice look 45 degree the corners , glue and finish nail it .
if not make the face piece 25 1/2′ and the sides would be 24 inches each , the back should be 25 1/2″ .
