Tape Rule
I was told that if you add letter “E or A” after either of them in a word like in “Tape”, the result will be
a long sound in the pronounciation of the word like in “Tape” but at the same time, thereis exceptions in this rule. Please explain the exceptions to this rules. thank you.
Generally, if a word ends in a silent “e”, you would pronounce a long vowel (long vowel sounds like the sound of the letter) – example: cap – when you add a silent “e” at the end, you get “cape” and the “a” in cape is now pronounced as a long “a”. A few exceptions to this “rule” are “have”, “give”, “sure”, “become” and “canoe” – even though these words end in a silent “e”, the vowels are not pronounced as a long vowel.
